Engaging with London’s kids and teens and enabling their voices to be heard.
The Young London website, designed by Miles Playne in 2005, supports the GLA’s vision of “A London where every child is brought up in a safe, happy and secure environment... and where all children are listened to, their rights are respected and their unique contribution and potential is nurtured, recognised and realise
In 2007 the GLA wanted to extend this popular and successful site by enabling the two distinct user groups (kids and teens) to contribute more content on the issues that matter to them and refresh the visual impact without changing the site’s personality to which London’s young people had grown attached.
Ruth Standing‘I have found working with Playne Creative an extremely positive experience. They have been very flexible through the project offering high-quality, creative solutions to various challenges. Thanks for all of your hard work.’
If you’re going to capture and keep the attention of young people it makes sense to talk their language and use a visual approach to which they can relate.
Playne Creative consulted the kids and teens themselves to find out what they wanted to see and do and how we could make the site better. We used mood boards to explore likes and dislikes and went back to them throughout the design stages to make sure we produced what they really liked, not what we thought they liked.
We restyled the site’s two main channels, using more acid colours for the kids and a more mature, yet equally eye-catching look for the teens.

Playne Creative’s services included information architecture, consultation with young people, illustrator management, design development, template build and usability testing.
