Creating a new fresh-looking magazine from scratch.
The Department for Work and Pensions wanted to produce a magazine to promote a recently relaunched 'New Deal' scheme. The brief was to design a magazine that conveyed an air of freshness and which was bright, positive and engaging. The magazine would be in both English and Welsh and would be found in Job Centres across England and Wales.
We started working on ideas for the name of this magazine. A careful reading of the brief initiated a number of possibilities but the name 'Catalyst' was an obvious winner as the magazine needed to be a catalyst for helping people get back into work.
To keep the magazine fresh and light we used one single powerful image on the front cover that illustrated the main feature in a slightly abstract way so it would appeal to people’s sense of inquisitiveness. This was backed up with sharp copy writing. The combination helped to make an engaging and visually interesting magazine cover that people would want to examine more closely and thus it would entice them to dip into the magazine contents.

On the back cover we created a sense of warmth and friendliness by displaying the website’s URL in a fun and imaginative way – one which always tied in with both the main cover image and featured subject.
