Client brief

Our website for Guide Dogs’ was working well as a really effective tool to support their work to improve the lives of people with visual impairments.

But this much-loved national charity never sits on its laurels and nor do we! We took on the challenge of refreshing and modernising the site to improve usability and conform to even stricter accessibility guidelines.

Our approach

Miles designed Guide Dogs’ first truly interactive website in 2000 and we were thrilled when Playne Creative was appointed in 2009 to redesign the site for the third time. We think this speaks volumes about the quality of the relationships we develop with our clients.

It was important to move the site forward to embrace web 2.0 social networking opportunities while retaining the fun and vibrancy that has made the site so popular with families and schools, as well as visually impaired people seeking support and a wide-range of fundraisers.

Guide Dogs event page

We brought fresh thinking to the imagery by promoting the use of photography showing guide dog users out in the community and living life to the full – illustrating freedom, choice, mobility and independence. We delivered a full set of designs and templates with a supporting toolkit of imagery and guidelines.Guide Dogs website guidelines

Our templates passed the rigorous accessibility tests with flying colours. And Guide Dogs now has a stylish new website that looks good and works well in browser windows ranging from 700 to 1600 pixels wide. No mean feat!

We’re great team players at Playne Creative and were happy to work alongside the client’s chosen technical developer and information architect to produce the end product.
